Go Your Own Way

There's a great book by Malcolm Gladwell called David and Goliath and the moral of the story is that any form of adversity you face is potentially a blessing in disguise.

Losing a job or finishing a freelance contract a few weeks early, isn't exactly the end of the world. However with the pressures of living in London - I do remember thinking that this wasn't cool at the time.

4 years down the line and on the eve of me selling the photo booth business I started off the back of this letter I can't tell you how grateful I am that this happened.

I can't say that I fully have my life together as we speak - far from it! However through setting up my own little venture I do feel as though I have a lot more control in my life than I've ever had in the past.

I thought I worked pretty bloody hard for the company that let me go. In early, out late, however when the work dried up. Hey that's it - something has gotta give - so I had to go.

Fair enough you might say. And fair enough indeed. I didn't own the company and why if I was the boss would I pay away more of my salary away simply to keep someone on so that they're able to pay their rent. Not my problem!

With the above in mind I think there is a fine line. For bosses I believe there is a bit of an obligation to seriously consider the 'people' element of a company and not simply use employees as pawns as people are the most important aspect of any company.

However for employees, and for anyone who works at a relatively large firm I would urge you to be careful and always look after no.1 as if things do start to go south then you can be damn sure that your boss isn't going to fire him/herself first!

All said and done the only bit of advice I'd like to give if I were to offer any is that if you're able to take a little ownership of your life from a work perspective then I would urge anyone to do so.

Potentially follow your intuition a little more and don't feel like you have to work for the system simply to earn the cash money as there is so much more to life than £.

I'll wrap it up here but simply to say if for any reason one were to you lose their job I can assure you the world will not end and if you put your thinking cap on, sit in silence for extended periods of time and listen to your inner voice - with hard work, patience and a bit of determination - any potential disaster could turn out to be a beautiful blessing in disguise.
